I think what K.C. meant, and certainly what I require, is the ability to run Surfulater from a USB Flash Drive.

I have a couple of licenses for Surfulater and a years worth of articles in it, yet I still find myself looking to other, more "portable" solutions. I carry my life on a stick--a USB Flash Drive. I use Time & Chaos for my portable PIM (Essential PIM is good as well), and Knowledge Base for my portable knowledge base.

I would love to use Surfulater instead of Knowledge Base, because it is more capable in many ways; however, I cannot install licenses on every PC I use--I need a solution licensed to me, not a computer.

K.C. I agree that access to Surfulater content from different PC's or via. the Web is important, if not very important for some and we are working towards this, on a number of fronts.

In the meantime you could just place your Knowledge Base files on a USB stick and carry them around that way.

Fortunately there are lots of people in the "real world" who love what we've delivered so far and find it very, very useful.

PS. A clear understanding of your "portability" needs would be welcome.

This program is great but it's got me tied to my desk and chair. Until I can use it portably (which by far is the way is the is most practical scenario) it's "NOT" that usable in the real world. When that happens you'll get me and thousands more users (buyers). Until then, we will continue to use our current (not so streamlined) methods.

Portability should be your next number one priority. Just a suggestion.

Hi David, thanks for the post. A crucial thing for me is that I eat my own dog food (well not really), but I use Surfulater heavily. Often times with software development this isn't the case, so folks miss out on a lot of first hand "end user" experience. I've also evaluated and used a lot of software over the years, and this has helped me to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. It is a continual learning experience though, which is a good thing.

The challenge is to have a balance between simplicity and power, whilst trying to keep most of the people happy, most of the time.

Thanks Neville. I can't way to start using version 2.0, it looks great. Like many of your other customers, my road is littered with PIMs, research tools, etc that I didn't really use...but I love surfulater. I've been using it for several months and it's obvious you put a lot of care into designing it with the user in mind. Thanks again, David Harper, founder, bionic turtle
