Tony, I'm surprised you had so much trouble with your Dell E520. It sounds like a reasonably new PC and I would have thought you'd only run into problems on older PC's. Some of the problems could be caused by non-Vista drivers.

Legion, I'd like to think we'll see most main stream apps updated for Vista before much longer. There will no doubt be problems with some programs which may never get updated.

Jacob, good point on legacy hardware. Personally I'd only be installing Vista on a reasonably new PC. Aero probably won't work on older PC's, at least not without replacing the video card.

I agree with your conclusion that you should only consider Vista once your main apps are compatible but I don't think you go far enough. Remember, not all your legacy hardware is compatible either as Chris Pirillo famously discovered:

Well.. i remember i didnt want to switch to XP.. though finally i did, mostly because of the app support, which will happen eventually with vista. i really hope that by the time im suppossed to do the switch, id be a happy linux user ;)
btw i did lay my hands on vista, it toook its time and reboots, although it was supposed to be installed from factory.. in the end,, i got pretty much what i already have: XP with nicer icons and "better" UI (vista bloatware)..

Well I found the exact opposite with vista never had so much trouble getting the network working particularly the printers in fact could not net work the printer through the printer router. 5.1 creative SBX-fi surround sound was a complete disaster wont keep the settings always goes back to the defaults when rebooting the computer etc etc. Desk top icons keep changing on there own accord. Other items just change on there own for known reason Windows live mail takes ages to open first time then its OK. I have a Dell E520 core 2 duo 2.4 with 256 video card and 2 gig of ram. I have 2 other computers with XP and have never had a problem with networking or surround sound etc. I am considering giving Vista the flick and going back to XP. I am not a novice in computing.
